In 1937 there were 65 million
sheep now there are less than six million. What happened to them? In the 50's every farmer
would have upto 200 hogs on his place, now every pig comes from Tyson, Smithfield, Conagra
or maybe Nippon. What happened? Same thing with chickens, it's Pilgrim, Tyson, Perdue or
forget it. Agriculture, Food, and Retailing are all perfect examples of fragmented
industries as Porter mentioned in his book, "Competitive Strategy". Sheep and
goats, at two million, are scattered over an infinite number of farms. Pigs and chicks got
consolidated into the hands of a few with the advent of factory farming. Cattle feed lots
are becoming company owned and semi-industrialized but no one can put their hands around
the product from cradle to grave. Pilgrim, Perdue and Tyson are really producers and butchers and make money all day long. Smithfield is the only producer-packer for piggly-wigglies and that monopoly position gives him 18 years of earnings that beat those of GE, Warren Buffet and the Standard & Poors Index. Our strategy is to be the only licensed supplier of raw goat's milk in the Houston area. We intend to milk 50 goats on 5 acres for gross revenues of $10,000 a month. Texas and forty-seven other states permit the sale of raw milk only on the farm, making us the livestock producer, milker, bottler and retailer. Fifty nannies giving a gallon a day for 305 days, at eight dollars a gallon means $122,000 a year or $10,167 a month. My strategy for enticing those folks to drive 60 miles out into the country and purchase 15,250 gallons of raw goats milk is the subject of alternative strategies (A) Health Food, (B) Natural Foods, and (C) Kefir/TDN Diet. Slanker's Grass-fed Meats produces and markets grass-fed beef, pork, goat and lamb that are raised on forage without grain, subtherapeutic antibiotics, or hormone implants.
